1/ Hi Grandmaster Kim good to speak to you again. Please tell us the meaning of Haedong Kumdo

 

 

and also how you got  started training in Haedong Kumdo?

 

 

 

 

HAE-DONG-KUM-DO - Hae mean Sea, Dong means East,Kum means Sword and Do mean Way thus the meaning of

 

 

 

Haedong Kumdo is translated as The Eastern Sword Martial Art. Haedong Kumdo is literally the original Korean sword

 

 

 

 

techniques.

 

 

 

It is the traditional Kumdo korean warriors trained in to prepare for real battle and is totally different from Jukdo(bamboo

 

 

 

sword) sports and Guhapdo, which were imported from Japan. one day I was reading a newspaper, I read about people

 

 

 

 

training in real sword techniques in a gym and in the mountains. I was attracted by the idea of using a real sword, as well as

 

 

 

 

 

the special training that went along with the martial art, especially candal extinguishing, the various cutting methods,

 

 

 

 

and the specific techniques for increasing concentration. Those things was attracted so much and started Haedong Kumdo.

 

 

 

 

2/ Grandmaster Kim have you trained in any other martial arts?

 

 

 

When I was in elementary school, I learned Hapkido, and Kuksulwon. In

 

 

 

the middle school I learned Judo at Yangmukwan, in highschool.

 

 

I learned kickboxing, and in university I learned taekwondo.

 

 

 

3/ Grandmaster Kim what make Haedong Kumdo special to you?

 

It felt so good to use and train with a real sword, and the unique training methods, such as; candal

 

 

 

extinguishing and lighting

 

 

cut and so on, really made the art special to me.

 

 

After training for 2-3years training in Haedong Kumdo, I thought that Cutting with a real sword was one of

 

 

best items in HK'.

 

 

 

I cannot explain and express by words the inner and outer changes in myself after training in Haedong

 

 

Kumdo for so many

 

 

years. It can only be felt by developing inner and outer control by daily and continuous  training.

 

 

To tell the truth, I can say this is just the very best gift I can receive from Haedong Kumdo.

 

 

Cutting with two real swords blindfolded is the best example of how HaedongKumdo has shown me how to

 

 

harmonize the inner and outer.    

 

 

 

 

4/ Grandmaster Kim what are your plans to spread Haedong Kumdo to other countries?

 

 

 

 

I have plans to spread it all over the world with representatives in many countries.

 

 

First I spread it from my country to Europe, with the headquarters based in the UK.

 

 

Next, I spread it to the Africa Continent, with the headquarters based in South Africa.

 

 

 

We now have a headquarters in india, and from there it will spread to other neighboring nations such as

 

 

Nepal, Sri Lanka and

 

 

Pakistan etc.

 

 

We are planning to spread it throughout China with a headquarters in Senjin, which is located in the southern

 

 

 

part of China.

 

 

 

From the headquarters in Canada, based in Toronto, it will spread throughoutl the country. We also have

 

 

masters in Quebec

 

 

 

and LA and from their it will spread through southern and eastern areas of America.

 

5/ Grandmaster Kim can you please tell us a little about the performances you are doing in Korea?

 

We generally practice in Dojang or the outdoors .

 

 

But I was the first to put HaedongKumdo on a famous stage where famous actors and dancers have

 

 

performed. Places

 

 

such as; the Busan Cultural Central and Gwangju Cultural Central etc.

 

 

 

 

<<2005HaedongKumdo Performance>> which was held at the Busan Cultural Center on 12th June 2005 was

 

 

the 4th

 

 

 

performance. It was shown on TV and was written about in the newspapers etc

 

 

 

 

6/ Grandmaster Kim how was your UK tour earlier in the year?

 

 

 

 

When I arrived and for my first Seminar in the UK, I was so curious about how many martial artists are in the

 

 

UK, and how

 

 

they would respond to Haedong Kumdo.

 

 

I did my best to let many people in the martial arts in the UK get feel for and get interested in my approach

 

 

 

to Haedong

 

 

 

Kumdo. Thanks to GM Marrk  who is the REP of UK UWHKF and GM Edd ie, Rep of SA.

 

 

 

I can say, with my team in UK, I had a good opportunity to spread  and get people started in Haedong

 

 

 

Kumdo during my first

 

 

 

tour of the UK.

 

 

 

 

7/ Grandmaster Kim have you any plans to visit the UK again in 2005?

 

 

First of all, I'd like to thank Mark for  my 2nd Tour of UK.

 

 

I want to help anyone who has an interest to understand HK and teach some more advanced skills.

 

 

I hope that many people in the UK will have developed physical and mental health through HK.

 

 

In this 2nd Tour of UK , we will have a Black belt Test , a Color belt Test and a Seminar of Haedong Kumdo. I

 

 

expect that

 

 

more people than before will be there.

8/ Grandmaster Kim are there any Haedong Kumdo championships planned?

 

 

 

I have a plan to have World Haedongkumdo Championships every other year in each of the member

 

 

countries. But before

 

 

 

the world championships, I want to help them to increase their ability.
