The Feedback of Swedish Haedong Kumdo Events

The weekend of the 3rd and 4th of May saw, what can only be described as a gathering of

Masters in Vasteras, Sweden as part of the launch of the United World Haedong Kumdo

Federation in Sweden.

With practitioners travelling from Finland, Germany, England, Ireland and the Netherlands to train along side their Swedish counterparts under Grandmaster Kim, Jeong Seong this international event was truly a unique opportunity for Haedong Kumdo practitioners across Europe.

The weekend began with an opening address by Grandmaster Kim before five members of the Swedish Federation, training under Master Pierre Sundin tested under the eminent Grandmaster for their 1st Dan Black Belt.   The candidates for examination has been met the stringent requirements of the test, and at last was awarded their grade.

After the presentation of the grades, the tense atmosphere which naturally accompanies any Dan test relaxed, and the crowd of spectators were treated to performances of Simsang Kumbup and Two Sword Sparring by the Irish Group, Mast Steve & Master Harry with HK Rep Master Martin,  followed by a variety of Ssang Su and Ssang Kumbup, paper cutting, and apple slicing (projected cutting) by the Finish group, Master Mika & Johannes and Instructor Henri.

With the demonstrations over it was time to learn, and the group of trainees was divided into Beginners, instructed by Master Pierre Sundin from Sweden, Colour Belts, instructed by Master Mika Väyrynen from Finland and Black Belts, instructed by Grandmaster Kim himself.

The initial focus of the weekend was on the use of the single sword with Master Sundin teaching the basic cuts of Haedong Kumdo, Master Väyrynen instructing in rolling and cutting and Ssang Su Kumbup while Grandmaster Kim focused on three of the Yedo Kumbup.

With the first day over, all retired to their hotels before meeting again at a specially arranged dinner in Vasteras town centre.  This was a great opportunity to relax and enjoy the night life of Vasteras, and for the European Haedong Kumdo practitioners to socialise and get to know each other better.

Sunday morning before the training the representatives of each country present met for the first European Haedong Kumdo meeting.   Under the direction of Grandmaster Kim, Master Mika Väyrynen from Finland chaired the meeting which saw consensus on the need to develop stronger links between the European nations.

It was also agreed that European Instructor training was needed annually to develop the skills of every national instructor to ensure high quality instruction in each country.    It was agreed at the meeting that the first of these would take place in Ireland, followed by Finland in 2009 and a return to Sweden in 2010.

Also discussed was the development of the European Haedong Kumdo Championships.   There is still more planning to be done, but working together all were confident that this could be organised successfully.

Finishing up the weekend on the training floor Grandmaster Kim taught Ssang Kumbup (two sword forms), and cutting, in particular Bamboo cutting, with those more experienced in cutting trying their hand at wood cutting with the live sword.   A difficult thing for even the most experienced practitioner.

The end of this session saw the end of a weekend of hard training, and much learning under the guidance of Grandmaster Kim.   It was an opportunity for all practitioners in Europe to gain further insight into the nuances which make Haedong Kumdo such a wonderful expression of the individual and the sword becoming one, and those present made the most of this visit of this true Master of the Sword.

All present offered their thanks to the Swedish hosts who worked hard to organise the weekend and who made every individual feel welcome to their home town.   All eyes are now firmly set on Ireland in August of this year, where there will be more opportunities to learn, to share and grow in knowledge of Haedong Kumdo and to meet with friends, old and new.
